Project Partners
MIAD, Service Learning, Writing and Humanities
This class is housed at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, within the Service Learning, Writing and Humanities Departments. The amazing students who have made such incredible work, and who are alums and collaborators on these projects, were able to do so through MIAD. I am extremely grateful for the employment, support and generosity I have received from Milwaukee School of Art & Design. This class could not run without them.
Dr. Arijit Sen
Dr. Arijit Sen has been a collaborator and partner with Storytelling the Environment since its inception, sharing his extensive knowledge of Milwaukee and helping steward us through local stories, histories, landscapes and communities. Students have worked with Dr. Sen, his students and partners, both in class and outside, to support our local community through cultural events, workshops, conversations and the production of a collection of zines telling local stories.
Dr. Sen teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and is an architect and vernacular architecture historian who writes, teaches and studies urban cultural landscapes. Sen’s academic and research background is in architectural history, social, cultural and behavioral analysis of the built environment, and American cultural landscape studies. He teaches courses in American cultural landscapes that focus on methods of doing urban fieldwork and research.
Dr. Michael Carriere
Dr. Michael Carriere has helped support Storytelling the Environment by sharing his knowledge of local history, particularly of urban agriculture and food ways, connecting us with local groups and organizations, supporting field trips, and introducing students to local community projects. He continues to work in collaboration with students and faculty to support relationships and projects around storytelling on the North side, especially within Sherman Park and the Lindsay Heights Neighborhood.
Dr. Carriere teaches at Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), where he is the Director of the University Scholars Program. He is an urban historian, with expertise in American history, urban studies and sustainability.
Katie Grinell
Katie Grinell has been involved with Storytelling the Environment since its inception, first as an attentive student, then a committed colleague through a teaching assistantship, and both student and community support positions. Her feedback, knowledge and commitment to teaching and to our students has been invaluable in the formation of this class.

Katie is a Jewish-American multidisciplinary artist and MIAD alum., whose practice investigates darkroom photography, image capturing, collage, and painting. She is currently pursuing an MFA in Studio Art and Florida State University.
Chelsea Wait
Chelsea Wait provides opportunities for Storytelling the Environment to engage with students and faculty of the DEBI Research Collaborative. DEBI (diversity, equity, belonging and inclusion) turns a broad range of research and multimedia resources into interactive web-based resource guides and zines for students, faculty, and community members to use and implement. Students of Storytelling the Environment work with DEBI from the discussion stage through storyboarding, design and making.
Chelsea Wait teaches in the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her research focuses on community collaboration, storytelling, public history, and the ways in which people practice care in the built environment and urban landscape. Her research also integrates her own public art practice.
